Zeplin no longer uses fixed platform types for projects and styleguides. Previously, a project's type determined which specs, assets, and extensions were shown. Now, this information is generated dynamically based on the platform selected by each user—removing the need for separate platform-specific projects and simplifying design handoff for multi-platform teams.

Why this change?

Platform-neutral projects make it easier to collaborate across platforms without duplicating work. You can now work in a single project and simply switch between Web, iOS, Android, or macOS to view the exact specs, assets, and code snippets you need.

Designs stay in one place—along with all your comments, documentation, and updates. Developers get platform-specific details based on their own selection, and teams spend less time managing multiple versions of the same project.

How it works

When viewing a screen or component in Zeplin, you'll now see a platform switcher in the right panel. Selecting a platform updates the view to show:

  • Specs in the correct units

  • Assets in the right formats and scales

  • Relevant code snippets and extensions

💁‍♀️ Your platform selection does not affect other members in the project.

Extensions

Zeplin displays code snippets dynamically based on your selected platform. Here's how it works:

  • Default extensions like HTML, CSS, Swift, Attributed Strings, and XML are automatically enabled based on the selected platform.

  • All your extensions are listed in the project dashboard, regardless of type, and they are filtered on the right panel according to your selected platform.

  • You can add any extensions from the Extensions page, and Zeplin will display them accordingly.

What happens to existing projects?

Existing projects remain as they are, but all platform-specific functionality is now tied to the selected platform—not the project type. For screens exported more than a few years ago, only the assets for the original platform type will be available. Zeplin will let you know if there are any missing assets.
